Applicants must meet specific academic qualifications: a minimum GPA of 2.80 for undergraduate programs and 2.40 for graduate programs, with higher standards required for admission to top universities. South Korea accepts up to a three-year education gap after secondary education and up to a five-year gap between a bachelor's and master's degree. English language proficiency is crucial, with a minimum IELTS score of 5.5 (with at least 5.0 in each band) for both undergraduate and master’s coursework. Alternatively, a TOEFL iBT score is also widely accepted.
The documentation checklist for a South Korean student visa includes a completed visa application form, a valid passport, academic transcripts (with character certificates for school, intermediate, and bachelor’s levels), ward documents (proof of guardianship), a medical report, income proof, CV, statement of purpose (SOP), no objection letter, four passport-sized photographs, property valuation certificates, and a police clearance certificate. Ensuring that these documents are prepared will facilitate a smooth visa application process.
There are two main types of study visas in South Korea: the D-2 Visa for students studying major university courses and the D-4 Visa for students enrolled in Korean language programs. The D-2 Visa allows students to work and study in their field of interest, while the D-4 Visa is for language studies and does not permit working or studying major courses at universities. The D-2 Visa Grant Notice is valid for 90 days from issuance, and students must apply for a Residence Card within 90 days of arrival in Korea, which is required to open a bank account.
There are two primary intake periods for university admissions in South Korea: Spring Admission begins in March, and students should apply between October and December of the previous year. Fall Admission starts in September, with the application period running from April to July. A few institutions offer an August Intake. Certain specialized programs, such as a Bachelor of Nursing, may have a single intake in February-March.
The cost of living in South Korea varies, with eating out costing around 2000 KRW (195 NPR), groceries ranging from 2968 to 25000 KRW (230 to 2450 NPR), and public transport fees between 1400 and 60000 KRW (145 to 5800 NPR). Utility bills range from 32226 to 235325 KRW (3125 to 22500 NPR), while single apartment rent is approximately 699171 to 1121394.85 KRW (67500 to 108500 NPR) per month. Tuition fees for bachelor's degrees range from 3,700,000 to 7,000,000 KRW (358,800 to 678,000 NPR) annually, and master’s programs range from 4,000,000 to 8,000,000 KRW (387,000 to 775,000 NPR) per year.
Nepalese students in South Korea are permitted to work part-time for up to 25 hours per week on weekdays and full-time on weekends and holidays. The hourly wage is around NPR 1000 to 1200. Common part-time job roles include retail assistant, hospitality staff, tutor, administrative support, delivery services, event staffing, and freelance gigs in areas like graphic design and programming. Graduates can apply for a Post-Study Work Visa (D-2-7), allowing them to stay in the country for up to six months to seek employment opportunities related to their field of study.
